Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Saxophonist Eli Degibri is a graduate of "Thelma Yellin" School of the Arts.
In 1997, following an invitation to the Berklee College of Music, he moved to Boston. Immediately after, he was awarded a full scholarship for the prestigious new program at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance in the New England Conservatory. As one of only six musicians selected from around the world, he was privileged to perform with legendary jazz masters including Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, and Clark Terry. In 1998 Degibri and the Institute of Jazz Performance students toured South America with seven-time Grammy recipient and 1987 Oscar winner Herbie Hancock.
The following year, after Eli graduated from the Institute with honors, he received a wonderful opportunity and was invited to join the Hancock Sextet - this time as a hired band member. During 1999-2001 he toured with Hancock in Japan, New York, South Africa and Europe.
Since 2001 Degibri has been performing also with the legendary Charles Mingus Big Band, and touring Europe with drummer Al Foster.

In Israel, Degibri has frequently performed at the acclaimed Red Sea Jazz Festival with his own band, and with other ensembles. In addition, he took part in the recordings of two of Israel's leading musicians, Alon Olearchick and Yoni Rechter, as a saxophonist as well as a singer.

In 2003, Eli released his debut CD "In The Beginning" on the "Fresh Sound" label. In 2006 Eli released two new CDs, one with pianist Kevin Hays titled "one Little Song", with eight of his original compositions. The second, "Eli Degibri – Emotionally Available," contained new compositions influenced by American, Brazilian and Israeli music.

In 2006 he was announced winner of the esteemed Israeli Prime Minister's Prize for Jazz Composition. The judges commented, "Degibri's path on the roads of local and international jazz is a great example to other jazz composers and musicians in Israel. This is a story of perseverance, humility and constant striving for excellence."

Eli continues to play his own music with his band, the "Eli Degibri Quintet," as well as appear as a guest saxophone player all over the world.

Eli Degibri was chosen by the distinguished members of IcExcellence Advisory Board for Jazz Music: Dan Gottfried, Amikam Kimelman and Iris Portugaly .

Press Reviews
"Degibri's lyrical gift eclipses the muscular complexity of his lines; His ideas tend to unfold like minimalist mobius strips, twisting inside-out in tangential trajectories in a burred, husky tone... His original compositions shine with short, self-contained sections that amalgamate effortlessly into compelling holisms"
All About Jazz

"Young tenor saxophonist Eli Degibri brings a seasoned and somewhat unique approach to his debut recording, In The Beginning... the music is delivered with thoughtful and refined performances that help to distinguish Degibri from other tenor saxophonists... Soulful, poignant, and delivered with stark control, Degibri has clearly honed the finer attributes of his instrument... this is a strong and memorable debut from an emerging artist who warrants a closer listen."
Mark F. Turner, March 2004

"Young tenor saxophonist from Israel, Eli Degibri is just starting to be known in New York; he commanded attention when he toured with Herbie Hancock several years ago. Don't miss him. He's a very modern improviser, superartful; his creations are spiky and fractured but immaculately sculptured."
Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

"...saxophone player Eli Degibri masters every possible way of creating sounds with a saxophone: long, distant notes or funky melodies, all brought using the same abundance
of energy."
Freestyle, 1999

"The young Israeli tenor player has been getting props for a stint with Herbie Hancock and a handful of head-turning local gigs. Central to his new In the Beginning is a voluptuous tone that accents an array of fiercely judicious solos. When DeGibri takes off he pulls you
with him."
Macnie, Village Voice - June 2004
